Day 20: the weekend of breakthroughs

Well I promised a day 20, but its more of a multi day post…

On Friday evening I went to my friends for homemade pizzas, Jamie olivers recipe (awesome btw), an inbetweeners session and a catch up. All was amazing and its given me ideas for my house warming.

Saturday was, wait for it, a dog training day. And we finally got Tweed to stay while someone else threw the dummies! My whistling needs a bit of improvement, as I’ve reached the point of frustration where everything sounds the same. Solo managed to pick a full size (lighter weight) dummy which was great she’s slowly building up to a full weight dummy. Findlay did fine he’s trusting Heather more now and direction really well.

Today was swim day, Amy and me went to Ellerton park and swam in the lake.

image

Ellerton park

And as nerve racking as it seemed once your in the water its fine. Cold but fine. Amy is upgrading to a full length suit mind as today she had a shorty and her foot turned purple also I think she felt the cold more than me. Swimming in a wetsuit is actually harder than you’d think as your feet try to float and your movement is restricted. But after a few more practice sessions we’ll be ready.

And so ends my daily update mission, hopefully I’ll manage the weekly update mission a bit better!

Day 19: Dummies for Dummies

Today (yesterday) was the fortnightly dog training session at Hetton Lyons Park. So off went Tweed, me, solo and Heather for a night of retriever training.

All went pretty well, for most people. Quite a big turn out for the puppy group. Tweed got a few compliments, although I could have killed him a couple of times as he’s obsessed with the dummy!! But what is annoying is he’s steady at home?

But anyway, we have some homework again to go over. And we’ll see how we can improve for next time. Sometimes I look at him and think, Jesus you’d never think you worked last season, its unreal!!

Anyway everyone else had odds and ends to go over. Solo picked a big dog dummy for the first time as she’s only just started with a puppy dummy this last few weeks. But she’s coming along fine, she’s only a pup bless her.

Right well… Tomorrow Will be my last daily post. I’m finding I have less and less to write about the more I write. So my new target (to reduce reader boredom) is once a week. But I Will do 20 days straight to end this sequence as I’m obsessed with even numbers!

Day 18: Bruises a eulogy

Pole yesterday was a nice way to end a Tuesday a bit of exercise some social banter and bruises galore. You see this is the thing that professional pole dancers must either hide well or just manage not to do.

Bruises it turns out are a part of the deal. But I suppose metal on flesh isn’t generally a non bruise causing scenario. I’ve had millions of bruises now, some real stonkers and some not worth writing home about.

Its odd to get excited about a bruise. What’s wierder is documenting it’s development, which myself and others have done, I’m not crazy honest!!

Day 17: Why do I bother?

So today I learned that The Secret Circle got canned after one season… This is the umpteenth TV show that I get in to that has been prematurely cancelled. So today I vent!!

The series hasn’t even finished yet here in the UK and now I have a decision, do I make the effort and watch it or do I not bother as its the end??

The CW are to blame… But why do TV shows die, why not as a standard rule allow every show 2 seasons? That way fans get a total story and between the first and second season the fan base can increase! If you can’t tell I clearly have no life, I’m ranting about a TV show being cancelled.

But its the morality of it all. You suck us into these shows then just dump us with a mass of disappointment. We do everything asked of us we watch, we absorb, we discuss, we enjoy. But Nooooooooo you steal it from us. You do the unthinkable and unforgivable thing like taking candy from a baby or kicking a puppy/baby.

I am saddened by the TV people, yes you took our show but you took the cast and crews jobs. In these recession filled times how can you do that, they could end up out on the street with no job, no home to go to (unimaginable really the whole cast was great, they’ll easily get new work).

But still!!!

On that note: what show have you got in to that inadvertently was cancelled?

Day 16: Another day, another dollar

So another Monday – back to work I go. After another dog filled weekend I begin a more spread out activity filled week:

Monday: Work

Tuesday: Work and Pole @ Tempest Dance Studio

Wednesday: Work and dog training (pre-training class tomorrow)

Thursday: Work and GRCN Dog training class @ Hetton Lyons Park

Friday: Work and a girly night in

I haven’t ever posted a pole dancing picture on my blog yet, so consider this a first… I do have more images to come, but this is as exciting as it gets for now!

Day 15: Streatlam success for Stormford Alter Ego

Northumberland and Durham Labrador Club today ran a working test at Streatlam.

The stakes were Puppy, Novice dog/handler and Novice. And Stormford Alter Ego was running in the Novice dog/handler. Remember last time he ran he ended up looking like this…

This time however was a different story.

Test 1: A double mark (choice of first pick)
Findlay was sent for the right mark first (which was the second dropped dummy) he was really paying attention to Heather’s commands. He handled well and scented the dummy and delivered it nicely. The second pick he went out for, again handled onto well and returned it with from what I could see little fault considering its a novice stake. Score: 14/20

Test 2: Mark
Now from where I was standing I couldn’t see much. But he went out well and said hello to the dummy thrower got a little distracted by the test running over the way but again he responded to Heather’s commands well and all in all had a decent retrieve. He even managed to keep out of the tempting water just the other side of a bush! Score: 10/20

Test 3: Mark (at a distance)
I say at a distance because it looked further than the previous mark!! Again my view was pretty obstructed but he went out with some pace picked the dummy and delivered it without a single fault. Score: 20/20

A grand total of 44/60. Not quite in amongst the rosettes but not far off! I think for a second effort and considering last time he tried to take down 2 geese and got scratched he’s done well. So congratulations to all at Stormford towers for a successful day.

Next time its East Harsley (anniversary of the goose session)

Day 12: Wetsuit wiggle

Today my aquasphere Wetsuit rental arrived from www.tristore.com and good god are they hard to wiggle into. After assistance from a brother and my mother I finally got into it. Honestly I know there built to keep the water out but surely I’m meant to be able to get into it??

After much effort getting in then came getting out. By the way, just as difficult! A tug of war ensued between me, the suit, my mam and my feet… And now I’m free my diet just got stricter if I’m swimming in that thing I’m losing another 5kg cause seriously that things unreal.

I can move in it and swim in it but getting in and out has to got get a little bit easier surely? Tips welcome, very welcome!!!

Oh and how sweaty are they?

Day 11: Fire, what fire?

Today was my first day back at work after the bank holiday weekend, and been thrown in at the deep end really doesn’t cover it!!

I went to work early today to meet a delivery… Or so I thought. I arrived to find the fire alarms going off!

Oh no said I another fault on the fire panel. Oh well best go check what the crack is. So off I trot after calling security to report the alarm and check the building. I couldn’t locate the fire and couldn’t smell smoke. I rang them back to say no worry, there be no fire just send a leccy out to reset the alarms (famous last words)

So I sit and wait then up comes the leccy and a minion and they go check the fire panels;
“It says plant room 1st floor, where might that be?”
“Oh upstairs on the right.”
“Claire?”
“Yes?”
“There has been a fire its gone out but we’re keeping the doors open to clear the smell of smoke!!”

Would you believe it?? It’s always the last place you look!!

Note: all was fine after this point and normal work day resumed.

Day 10: Is it wrong to find house stuff shopping exciting?

Today I got totally over excited looking at house stuff. Not just small bits and pieces (which I also totally got excited about) but also furniture, radiators and wardrobe. B&Q was like heaven today.

The sweet smell of wood and paint tins, light fittings and PVC coatings. I was in awe. I’m a total loser I know but its so thrilling picking out the inside of a fitted wardrobe, shoe rack or trouser rail? Internal mirror or mirrored door?

Oh and light fittings, light fittings are like the pieste resistance of a room. They bring everything together in a harmonious glow, they have to be just right not too much that they dominate the space (or potentially take an eye out) but not so small that they lose that together feeling.

If you can’t tell clearly I either was an interior designer in my past life or I’ve got some psychological issue with inanimate objects… I vote I’m just odd.

Day 9: Recovery complete!

After a good nearly 24 hours of sleep I’m now in a fit state of compusmentusness that I am functioning normally, (or as normal as can be expected considering this is me!)

So as normality resumes I realise my ramblings are quite literally that ramblings. Blogging everyday is a discovery of how boring someone’s life can be.

Today I ordered our Stormin the Castle tickets, yay to that! That’s a good blog post and photo album in the offing! Should be a good weekend rain or shine. So if you see me cheering my little heart out in the tents say hi!

Other things to look forward to are:
1. Moving day
2. Christmas
3. My swim
4. Stormin the Castle.
5. Race day
Hmmm if I think of any more I’ll add them in!

Tomorrow I have another days holiday and I’m spending it shopping. Then back to the grind on Wednesday… So I foresee more deep and meaningful posts coming (ha ha ha)

Day 8: The seven deadly sins, Sloth

Today I slept, nothing new there. However it may be constituted as Sloth like that I slept from 9 till 6 in the afternoon… Maybe. And as I write this I am back in bed getting ready to go to sleep… Again.

This is a bad thing but it was caused by another sin so all in all its been a rather sinful bank holiday so far!

Maybe I’m getting old, I used to be fine after a night on the tiles. Sadly that is no more. I am part of a new era now, the group that succumb to the effects of late nights and alcohol… Sad sad times

Day 7: dog training and drinks

Due to alcohol consumption yesterday post is a day late… And rather hazy.

Yesterday was a dog training morning with findlay who did very well and kept out of the tempting water. Big challenge is on Sunday next weekend in his working test but he’s coming along. Or at least I think he is!

The night was spent in Durham on the lash. Good night some of it a bit vague, but all in all a good night. Still a bit hungover this morning, probably will be till after another good hour or so’s sleep so the post for today will be pretty dull I think.

Weather nice though!

Day 6: Driving Rant 2

A little while ago a friend of mine said that women are the worst drivers, this conversation began due to my rage at the inability of 70% of society to drive in the snow.

I beg to differ, although my track record accident wise is far from clean I consider myself a pretty competent driver especially in bad conditions i.e snow.

Anyway todays rant is aimed at people who are for want of a better description beyond their able driving years. Today after our outing around Durham my brother was very nearly wiped out my an elderly gentleman who was at a junction and after looking in or direction pulled out practically into my brothers car! Due to his young brain and ability he served and avoided what potentially would have been a very nasty accident.

The justification for the elderly gentleman pulling out into us… He didn’t see us (it wasn’t a blind junction it was a straight road) oh, yes, and he had someone behind him? Now this was the odd response, he had no right of way, he wasn’t in any rush… So why pull out into us???

That ends todays rant. More from the rants of Claire tomorrow!

Disclaimer: Please note this is not aimed at all old people who drive, it is merely an opinion formed from an incident.

xoxo

Day 5: Its the handler not the dog

Tonight I went to the GRCN training session and discovered that although Tweed is grand at generic picking up we aren’t quite up to trialing scratch. Not that we can compete together, but he’s a good dog to start with even if get is a hybrid.

The problem is me the dog knows what its got to do, I however am not a trialing standard handler… Yet! I will get there, got lots to work on as homework. But will be back with bells on in a fortnight to show my progression to my new mentor – Brian doesn’t know what he’s got coming!!!

Right, now begins my long weekend. Yes making the most of the back holiday and taking Friday to Tuesday off work. Yay!!

Shopping tomorrow, out Saturday night in Durham (and possibly Sunday) and mixture of dog training and house stuff in between. Nice!!

Day 4: I hate thee Lotus driver

Today random posting is primarily a rant, “what about?” you say…

Well there is someone who drives a Lotus who works where I do and obviously lives where I do to. And he is a nob head.

Why is this person to be described in such a way I hear you ask. Because he drives like a one! Yes he has what we would call a mid-life crisis car (a penis extension if you will…) but that is no excuse for driving at breakneck speed through every 30 zone on the road. This is a massive pet hate of mine.

I’m not generalising at all I don’t hate all Lotus drivers. Just this one, I’m sure there are conscientious Lotus drivers out there.

And so ends day 4′s rant.

Thank you for listening!

Day 3: Gemini success

Woot turns out tonight I nailed Gemini pose at pole (Tempest dance studio – Durham, link below). I’m so pleased although I’m gutted I still haven’t nailed scorpio.

Was interesting at Pole tonight, a bunch of newbies learning what I did back last year was fascinating! Turns out I’ve progressed way further than I thought. I can go upside down with ease now, and I think I’m a little bendier – my balance and coordination however is still dud but I think that’s most likely my brain!

The dog has improved from yesterday but it is very obvious that I am the problem. When I’m home he barks and whinges when I’m not home he is mute. So begins rehab for my Tweed. As if my dog has separation anxiety… How my uni lecturers would laugh!

Anywho my bruise is forming nicely from side climb in the back of my leg so I think I’ll call it a night.

Post 4 tomorrow may prove more difficult. If I manage 365 days I’ll be well impressed!!

Tempest Dance Studio

Day 2… Whatever shall I write about?

Ok so here it is day 2 of 365, but what on earth has happened since yesterday. In all honesty not a lot, I went to work, exciting much?

I suppose on a more interesting note I micro chipped another dog today. I seem to have quite a few under my belt now, cats I haven’t had much call on to do, but maybe that’s a sign of the times?

You know what’s weird – seeing dogs that used to be docked breeds with tails. The dog I chipped today was a jack Russell and it had the longest tail in the world! Seriously pre-docking ban days you would never have guessed they were THAT long.

Funny how you get so conditioned to seeing things looking a certain way…

On a further note for today I’m trying to sort out my major dog barking issue, so as i write this Tweed is outside in his kennel barking his little heart out. I’m trying the ignore it (instead of rewarding it with any form of attention). It’s so hard though, I am going out when he’s quiet to reward him, in the hope that the association will stick, he used to be fine but as this year has gone on he;s got progressively worse… Tips much appreciated. I’ve tried everything in the book that I can think of (I’ve even looked through all my University notes in my hours of true desperation!), so now I’m trying what I’ve tried previously to see if something sticks the second time around.

We’ll see if it works.

Right I think that will do for day 2, see you all again tomorrow!

Day 1 of 365

New mission for this year starting today I am going to try to blog every day for a whole year. Kind of as a reflection activity…

So here goes todays post.

This weekend has been mostly spent recovering after a charity doo in aid of PSPA. I got a little tippled, as you do and was out raged that my friend’s husband big AGAINST me for a day at the races at Gosforth racecourse. But the money went to a great cause and a good night was had by all, they raised around £4,500. The girls who organised it are also doing the 3 peak challenge. If you would like top sponsor them please click the following link (below) to their justgiving page.

Speaking of justgiving pages I have managed to get severely out of training for my big swim, it’s not that I don’t think I’ll manage I know I will, it’s more that I’d like to hit my time of an hour (total) for the mile swim. I’m obviously not nervous though or I’d be trying harder to get some training in.

I’m back to my pole classes this week, finally, after a couple of weeks of I thoroughly miss it. I took my pole down at home because of my imminent move so haven’t been able to practice either! LOSER!

On a further note my other mission of this year has been relatively successful, I’m trying to lose weight and so far I’ve hit nearly 70kg woot to that one – although my aim is more 60-65 I’m on my way!! Baby steps people (I have been on this mission since January and since we’re now in May nearly I think I’ve done ok, I’m not sharing what weight I started at ha ha ha).

Packing for the new house is practically completed, I just need the moving date now. So excited but also a little nervous, moving out for permanent not just uni is a little bit nerve racking, but I’ll be fine!

Ok that will do for today.

http://www.justgiving.com/Mary-Neil

Not long now…

I’ve ordered my wetsuit, and it’s just dawned on me how very little time there is now until my big swim – More practice is needed!! But I know I can do it, it’s my aim of an hour that is daunting.

But in order to up the sponsorship I thought I’d see if any of you lovely people who take the time to read my blog would like to sponsor me. So here is the link for my justgiving page:

https://www.justgiving.com/RobboGNSwim2012

The smallest amount makes a massive difference. So in advance, thank you.

GRCN – Crathorne 2012

First test of the season! Glorious weather and a good turn out.

The retrieves I was on were a river retrieve on the Novice which stumped the majority of runners, some failed to go into the water and others just couldn’t get the retrieve. It was a blind to a shot, but the wild Garlic was so overpowering I stunk of it all the way home! So that may have had something to do with it?

My second retrieve I again placed the blind, but they also had a mark to get second. I don’t think we had a single fail on the blind but the mark proved testing and a few dogs failed on that one.

But overall a good day with some lovely handling. Tweed came along for a ride out and was so mellow I thought he’d been switched. Steadied him up a treat, so that’s encouraging!

I’ll list the winners and judges etc. once I find the running order.

1st - Labrador – Falconlea Autumn Breeze
2nd – Labrador – Eshiels Danny Boy
3rd - Labrador - Mosshill Bramble

2012…

Welcome to the future! Yes another new year, that’s 26 I’ve now experienced, nearly 27. God does that make me feel old.

Still plodding on through life, still seeing where my path takes me and still in general a crazy person.

I will post more frequently this year I promise, only right now I have very little to post about, but as the weeks progress I’m sure something will happen that requires publishing!

xoxo

Merry Christmas

I would like to take this opportunity to say Merry Christmas to all my readers, (for other religions insert religious celebration in place of Christmas).

May you all have a wonderful holiday season, and a fabulous New Year… Let’s see what 2012 will bring.

Have a good ‘un!!

Training Session #3

I did it – tonight with Coach Heathers encouragement I swam a mile, in 63 minutes, so just over an hour.

And as a sign of that achievement I started up my fundraising page with justgiving.com

http://www.justgiving.com/RobboGNSwim2012

So start donating. I’m fundraising for Myeloma UK which is a charity that works with this specific cancer which sadly has affected my family and is something that personally I would like to see people are made more aware of. And most importantly I would like to see a cure in my lifetime…

Thank you xoxo

Training session #1

Ok so today training commenced, and weaning oneself in gently is the way forward. My aim, to do the final mile in 1.5 hours…

So off I went, with Heather of Stormford Golden’s as “coach”. Well if I try to do the whole thing in a combination of breast stroke and paddling on my back I’ll do grand. I can do a 25 metre length in breast stroke at a length a minute, for 30 minutes!! Then I start to slow.

“Coach” then went all hard-ass and demanded I swim front crawl, sadly I can swim the first length like a dolphin on speed… The following lengths not so much, I need to learn discipline and steady my pace. But I managed to do 2 lengths on front crawl eventually, and then totalled 4. Go me!

In total I successfully completed 50 lengths in 60 minutes… So even if I do it in breast stroke I’ll be well in my time. But this is only early days, I’ll get there eventually!!

Wait until I have to start my wild swimming training, that’s when the fun really starts.

Splashy, Splashy

Well people, I have decided – as crazily as it may sound – to take part in the Great North Swim 2012. Yes, that’s right, I’m going to attempt to train for and swim 1 mile (I chickened out on the 2 mile, but maybe in  2013, if we all live that long?)

So now I have something new to entertain you all with, my training. The swim is an open-water swim in Windermere, the Lake District.

Map picture

So what with my new Pole Dancing lessons, Swimming and dog training sessions I should be fit as a lop by the time the end of the world is upon us… ha ha.

Time for an update?

Well much time has passed now since my last posting. So time I think for another random rambling from the R-o-b-b-o.

Ok so now I’m a blonde, so many would say I have an excuse for my varying degrees of, well… blondness? So far I have to say I fully disagree with the statement “blondes have more fun”. I’m having no more degrees of fun-ness since grabbing the peroxide bottle than I did when I was; Red, Brunette, Blue, Black or any other wonderful colour I have been. But for whatever reason I feel like I should stick with the blonde for a while longer. But for those who know me well a while longer could be days, weeks, months or minutes!"

I’m mostly filling my time in planning my future adventures. Oktoberfest next year and maybe a nice little trip to somewhere obscure on my little tod again, but it’ll have to be Europe this time. It’s been a year or two since I stayed in my own continent so maybe I’ll come up with a way to do some other strategically placed excursion?

Life is in general is quite good in the land of me at the moment. Nothing overly exciting going on, but in general good, although I did hear via the BBC that apparently I will end up with high cholesterol. But as that’s kind of an hereditary thing in my family I guess that’s to be expected – Roll on the heart attack! It’s either that or cancer that will get me in the end. That is unless I get hit by a bus tomorrow, or you know an axe murderer jumps through my window tonight and brutally attacks me etc.

At least I have a zombie attack plan – but I’m not going to share it with you as otherwise you’ll all rob my rather strategic hiding place.

Shooting Season - Out on the Moors

We’ve not had any shooting as yet on the estate but fingers crossed we’ll get some days soon – Tweed is still coming on he’s done a few more days picking up now, and a few days loading, according to the “old man” he’s doing fine and so far we haven’t had too many squabbles over how his training is going. Wow he’s over a year old now, I’m 26 soon, nearly 30. WOW

Well I think on that note I should end this now depressing post – axe murderer’s, death, getting older – maybe I should scratch the earlier comment about life being good in the land of me…

Stormin the Castle 2011 (21st Anniversary Show)

Stormin the Castle at Witton le Wear was a brilliant feat again this year!

After taking a year off last year (that’s me not the Rally) it was good to be back. The line up was awesome and much fun was had by all.

Friday night has to be the pinnacle for me though, great weather for a start! And from Crows to the Emerald Theives to Ska-Toons much fun was had by all. We even fitted some dodgem time in! Although I must take this opportunity to apologise to everyone who we rambled on at that night, especially to the Scots who we had an awful habit of not fully understanding… But according to a posh scouser we were incredibly difficult to understand too. We talk to fast me thinks?

Saturday nights line-up for the Iris tent was brilliant. To anyone who hasn’t seen them you MUST see Bessie and the Zinc Buckets they put on the best show, 2nd time for me and I’d see them again in a heartbeat. Skinflint returned to the main stage this year – we last saw them at our first Stormin adventure in 2007 and they are still as good as last time if not better.

Saturday however it rained but it was nothing my faithful hunter wellies couldn’t deal with.

So now I’m sleeping it all off ready for work tomorrow. Stormin we love you, see all our friends old and new next year! Only 365 days to go…

Friday line-up

Always make a back up when dealing with the internet and jargon instructions!

Today I helped my good friend from stormford golden retrievers move her website hosting… I printed out the instructions and sorted through all the technical jargon and hey presto the website was now being hosted on wordpress, only there was no site?

Now as when I had moved to wordpress from spaces I figured it must be a delay in the moving so we e-mailed the respective hosts and left it to them. By the time I got home however I began to worry, so upon a bit of late research I discovered that actually you should save the website on something called an FTP. Argh!

But thankfully due to Cache on Google (why they don’t just call it an archive I don’t know?) I have just trawled through the whole site and put it all back together again, well except for some missing bits I couldn’t find. How stressed I was that I’d single handedly destroyed my friends hard work! I’m still hoping that the old host can do something but I figure I may as well act now instead of later.

So even if the instructions don’t mention these things always make a back up!

Ancient Robbo Proverb #1

I remember being told when I was younger never open a can of worms!

But in life I have learnt that opening a can of worms is one of those things that seems bad at the time but it can create a much better result. Think about it – if you just kept the can stored at the back of the kitchen cupboard for years until the worms have then died, gone all weird and smelly, fermented and then the can just bursts anyway and created a much bigger mess than it would have if you’d just opened it in the first place.

This is something we all would pay to remember.

There is no reasoning behind this post – I just felt like passing on some of my infamous and random wisdom to the world…

How to Camouflage a Golden Retriever… (GRCN Working Test – Morton Grange, East Harlsey)

Instead of my normal spiel post-working test I have delayed my update as I have been pondering on how best to put what happened into words. So here it is, let’s call it the day Stormford Alter Ego, found his Alter Ego.

Findlay as he’s known to his friends is known as a Show Golden (however to be completely honest a Goldie is a Goldie be it working or show – and that is only further proven by his behaviour in the test). He’s 5 years old and his owner/handler Heather only started training him in the ways of a working dog all of 12 months ago, although it may have been less than that?

This was his first or shall we say virgin run at a working test. The Wednesday before the test we had him out and did various runs with him as a last session before the big entry on the Sunday. He worked a treat, the only blind he missed was one that we’d set out and forgotten where we’d placed it and didn’t send him far enough back for (we were in the totally wrong area). Anyway this brought our hopes for Sunday up, he was under total control, he could find anything we dropped (bar that one) and he was working a dream… This was to be a curse.

He was entered into the Novice test and his first test was to be one we had never really thought of! It was a double (blind to a shot, and a mark) so Heather was a little bit nervous on her ability to get him to turn for a blind, but she set him off and got him to go for the blind. He was on top of it and then ’poof’ he vanished…

The ground at Morton grange is a variety, there is woodland, crop and open grassland all on banking sides with some nicely placed ponds and streams. Now if there is one thing anyone who owns a retriever will know, they love water. Findlay is no exception.

The blind was set just up from a pond. But this isn’t a clean pond, it’s practically a bog. He started the day a beautiful shade of cream gold and came back, well, looking like he was trying to fit in with Labrador’s that were looking on with anticipation. He looked a right state,  but not one to give up Heather sent him for the mark, but he was so weighed down he was struggling to run anymore so she called him and was scratched from that test. [0 points]

On to the second test. Now this one I couldn’t see past the hedge at but he successfully retrieved the dummy although he was again tempted by the water down the hill. But Heather managed to keep him in sight and handled him to the mark. [15 points]

Test three, test three, you’d think third time lucky… guess again! Now to tell a little bit of back story, heather has what some would consider a small holding so she has, or had, Hen’s, Ducks and Geese. She had to get rid of the Geese though as sadly the dogs were obsessed with them… Findlay in particular.

Test three was situated right next to a pond with, yes, Geese swimming on it. But not to be undeterred she walked the dog to the test. This was a blind to shot running down what some would say is a nice tunnel of trees and fence on one side – a straight run down to the blind at the end. She sent Findlay down the tunnel and told him to ‘get on’ so he did right into the pond after the Geese. Now to be fair as a gundog owner your dog should never go past game… Findlay was just doing what he thought he was meant to – retrieve a Goose…

Ten minutes passed with the dog and the geese swimming up and down the pond (that dog has got stamina!) I proceeded to run to the other side of the pond to attempt to call him from there. He looked, once, when I got angry and shouted and swore at him, then he carried on after the geese. Even some of the other competitors walking to the test got involved as we all tried to break the dogs distraction from the geese. The recall whistles failed, shouting his name failed, throwing sticks failed, but finally we had success – The dummy thrower shot the starting pistol and threw a bottle into the water which broke his attention long enough for the geese to get far enough away that when he turned to look at them he realised his task was impossible. He then swam to the edge to see Heather and had to be air lifted from the water as he was so bogged down he could hardly get out of the mud on the embankment. Honestly though that dog looked the happiest of all the dogs there that day, as embarrassing for Heather as it was he had the most fun. And let’s be honest it can only be up from here right? [0 points]

"Where've the Geese gone?" (Courtesy of D. Rose of Gaytonwood)

You’d think that she would call it quits now. Nope, he went on to run the fourth and final test. This one was no where near water and was a walk up to heal with a blind dropped behind and a mark thrown ahead. Blind first, then mark. He walked up to heal lovely and went back for the blind and only once tried to turn back for the mark but he handled well and got it. So we turned and he was sent out for the mark but I think by this point not just Heather but Findlay himself had given up, he looked drained and was so weighed down by pond weed and general filth that he hadn’t the energy to run. So he was called back in and that ended his first working test day. [15 points]

So Heather went to find a tap to clean the dog down and go over everything that had just happened.

Hindsight is a marvellous thing, but Geese, who could have predicted that? All in all though, I think everyone had a good day out and Findlay provided the entertainment. But if nothing else we know where we have to do work to get him up to scratch for next year, he will run again!!

Jet Lag… Arghhhhhh

Grrrrr I’ve been back a week nearly now (sad face, I miss my adventure compadres) and I haven’t had a good nights sleep since I returned!

I’m blaming Jet Lag but maybe my body is fighting against this non-air filled bed, because they were really comfy – No I’m being serious they were ace! I’m exhausted but can’t sleep it’s 00:12 now, I had a nap but now I’m wide awake. It’s so frustrating.

So to help me sleep I’m listening to my iPod… I doubt 30 seconds to mars is a good lullaby, but we’ll see? It beats counting sheep and I’ve got plenty of them to count out my window.

Back to normal in every other aspect but not in sleep. My eating is now back to normal, as in I can finish my food (now the portion sizes are smaller). Back to normal at work, but in order to function I need my sleep – God Damn It!!

Ok rant over, now to be soothed to sleep by the dulcet tones of Mr Leto, I’ll be sure to let you know if it’s successful.

Note: Not successful, however Ellie Goulding was.

Photo Delay

Apologies one and all – but for those of you who want to see the pictures from my adventures, this year and last and anything in between – I am changing my photo store from photobucket to Flickr. No real reason other than I’m finding photobucket too slow with uploading and difficult to deal with.

So once I have everything sorted you should be able to click on the link underneath my gravatar to see my beautiful (and not so beautiful) images. I don’t proclaim to be a professional photographer but I like to share!

Thanks for reading!

Homeward Bound (The Immigrants Return)

Today was the last day, day 17. So after taking a while to wake up after the previous nights drinking we went to get an extra suitcase – yes I had that much extra stuff to bring back I had to buy a bigger case!

Then the laborious task of packing began. But it was faster than I’d first thought. Pizza was the lunch of the day, and after much discussion on what is an appropriate pizza topping (apparently sweetcorn and bolognese sauce isn’t normal in America?)

We chilled out and watched tv before I had to head off and say the final farewell to Melissa before jumping on the plane.

13:38 London Heathrow
Well that was a long flight. I slept through most of it but did successfully watch 2 films. The first one being Paul which was really good, but not quite up to the standard of Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz. The second was Sucker Punch which was a bit, well, daft… It was a bit hard to follow and quite frankly weird. But the action sequences were quite good.

I also read some more of the Monster of Florence, which caught the attention of one of the flight attendants who was Italian. So he knew all about it anyway, which was cool as his perspective on it was I interesting to hear, seeing as he’d lived through the latter part of it. For those of you who don’t know he’s the Italian version of Jack the Ripper.

Anyway, I’m waiting for the final leg of the journey now. Not long till I’m home.

19:05 Home
I’m back baby! After a nice short flight, with a minor delay from London I’m now back sat on the couch at home.

Turns out I sat next to a couple who’d been on the San Francisco flight as well, sat literally just a seat or two over from me. So we had a chat about the places we saw, they were at the Giants game I was at too. How random!

Anyway, I’d now like to take this opportunity to say thank you again to everyone who’s been involved or I’ve met along the way on the trip.

Melissa and Angela you rock, and I’ll see you again soon! Now you get to recover from the madness that was USMAC 2011! Bring on Oktoberfest reunion… Woot

Day 16: The First Farewell… And the Last Hurrah…

Today we said goodbye to Angela as she was heading back a day before myself. We headed over the bay bridge to drop her in Oakland as she was spending the day with an old school friend then going to catch her flight later on in the afternoon.

We said goodbye, gave our hugs and winks and set off on our way. It was the moment I think I properly realised that it’s all coming to an end.

Melissa took me over to the academy of science that we’d tried to see earlier in the week but it had been super busy as it was free. So we paid and got in to a more empty museum. They have the most amazing exhibits. They even have a living rainforest, it’s stunning. We went to see the planetarium show which was mind bogglingly awesome! It’s a really good museum.

The night was spent sampling some great Thai food, then drinking with Melissa husband Martin’s football… Sorry soccer, buddies in San Francisco. A good night was had by all and I even got a few souvenirs to take home.

To finish off and soak up the alcohol we hit a place called Jack in the box for a tasty burger.

Not bad for the last day of the trip. Shame I forgot my camera! Boo!

Day 15: Big fish, Little fish, Cardboard box

After all the merriment and frivolity of last night we had a pretty chilled day today. We got up quite early considering, and headed off to Monterey to go to the aquarium. This was straight after heading to the place where the most amazing bagels are made. Nom, nom, nom!

Monterey is a seaside town which used to be the place to tin sardines. You can tell from the structure of some of the buildings (and from their names) they were the old canneries. It’s like any typical seaside town but it’s got an Aquarium to die for. It’s huge!

It’s got all the local species within and has a great concept to educate on what’s sustainable within local and national regions (it may just be US based, I need to check that but they have a great iPod app, as tested by Angela). Their tanks are pretty impressive and I got to touch a Ray fish in one of the pools which was really cool.

The best features for me were the jellyfish and the seahorse exhibit they were amazing, they even had the development cycles of the species and had some really awesome displays of the animals in their egg sacs!! I’ve got pictures and video footage it’s unreal!

We hit the gift shop and had a mosey around town afterwards. We were in the aquarium for like 3 hours or something there was so much to see. We had planned on going kayaking afterwards but due to the infamous fog and the fact we were running later than planned after lunch we decided to cancel. Yet again I failed to finish the meal, so I brought yet another box back of food!

We returned back and promptly vegetated, I’d fallen asleep on the car journey home already so it’s safe to say I was exhausted. We watched Rango which is potentially the most random children’s film of all time. And now I’m just blogging and watching Angela pack up her stuff. It’ll just be Melissa and me from tomorrow morning and we’re hoping to go the science museum after the queuing saga the other day. Damn freebies! Ha ha

And on Saturday once I pack(?!) we may head out to see Melissa’s friend Diane for a quick hike before I have to hit the airport but it all depends on time. I hope we can but we’ll see if it figures out logistically. I’m dreading packing!! It’s the worst part.

It’s being an amazing trip and I’d do it all again in an instant but it helps that I’m in good company otherwise I’d not get to do or even know about half the stuff I’ve seen. I’m getting nostalgic and it isn’t even over yet…

Better start planning USMAC 2012/13 in the coming months (he he he)

Day 14: Taking in the local culture…

A chilled day was had (minus parking drama) this morning was Crepes and a manicure for me and pedicures (again) for the girls. The manicurist commented on my dodgy nail!

Then we went to hit the museums, but we hit them on free Wednesday. The queue was immense we’d have been in it for like an hour at least just to get in. So we headed to see the golden gate bridge while the fog wasn’t surrounding it. We walked so far along it to take in the views. Its a pretty impressive view, and structure. Crazy tall too.

The evening consisted of a meal at the Stinking Rose a garlic based restaurant. Boy did we stink afterwards. The final instalment for the day was beach blanket babylon, an amazing cabaret/theatre show which is immense. Highly recommended just for the wigs and hats alone – A very pleasant surprise from Melissa the tour guide!

So because the night was still young we hit the yokel bar near Melissa’s pad, Winters bar. It was karaoke night so you know that the girls were going to sing. A very varied crowd was on the mike. We had hip hop, easy listening, rock and country, and even back up dancing! After a few Newcastle Brown Ales the night was a treat just like being in Stanhope but with Americans not Weardaliens.

We’re rolling through to Angela’s last day now. She flies on Friday back to Seattle.

Day 13: Valley of the Grapes

Napa time baby! Today was tge day for the wine… And boy did we try a lot of wine.

First off was Mumm where we tried that Carlos Santana “champagne” which I’m sure any fans of The Lonely Island will love. And it’s goooooood! We tried 6 sparkling wines there and had a look around the art gallery.

Then we popped into frogs leap (not stags leap) and sampled their wares they supplied some good cheese and fruit. We also played a game of corn hole… Don’t ask it’s a weird ass game! But I rocked it!!

Third stop was our picnic lunch made by Melissa at Rutherford Grove where again we sampled a few good grape juices and some good chocolate wine sauces. The sun today was toasty hot, it was into the high 80′s at some points. So lunch outside on the grass was ideal. It was a very classy day, but the best was yet to come.

Our final stop was at Terra Valentine. This was where Diane (one if Melissa’s friends) who came along on the trip to Napa, had a cousin who worked. So we totally got VIP treatment. The vineyard is bookings only normally for tastings and is a relatively small winery in comparison to some in the valley. They do damn good grape juice! It was the best all day, there reds were beautiful.

After the wine adventure we went for dinner at a local restaurant called Farmsteads where the food was amazing. The restaurant was pretty cute to look at too. I’d go back in an instant. All (or at least as much as they can) of their produce is home grown in their gardens or bought in from local sources.

So all in all a fun day was had. We gad a pretty rock star day in the middle of wine country. Out of the 400+ vineyards I think the ones we did made the day special. Everyone of them was good but the private tasting and tour were the best!

Day 12: Breakfast at Tiffanys and a night with the BFG’s

Well, well, well San Francisco is a sight – That’s a positive statement!

We started off the tour today courtesy of Melissa with a nice view of the city from one of the higher points it’s very different from the other big cities I’ve been into on my travels. The Bay and Golden Gate bridges to me are stunning although I’ve been told Bay bridge is ugly, and that’s coming from a local.

We were lucky with the mornings weather as the infamous San Francisco fog held itself at bay long enough for us to make the most of the glorious sunshine for our walkabout. We looked around downtown, Chinatown and the posh bits if the city alongside the older parts which look to have a lot of culture to offer. We went into Tiffanys and I marvelled at the shiny shiny things… Ah to be rich!

In the afternoon we went to pier 39 the more touristy pier to take in all that it had to offer. I got some photos of Alcatraz, and fingers crossed I may get to go on a tour but if not it can go on the list for next time! So we ambled around and had some lunch at a nice restaurant which offered mostly crab, so I had Sand Dabs (a White fish) with cous cous.

After a pleasant adventure we headed back and got changed (bundled up more like) and then went to the Giants vs Dodgers game at the AT&T stadium in San Francisco. I got a foam finger!

I followed it relatively well, we saw a home run a double out and all the fun in-between. Giants (the home team) won, which was nice. But we did find out on the way home that apparently the Dodgers are going into liquidation? So that’s a sad end to the rivalry they are famous for.

Tomorrow is Napa valley wine tour day, so got to get rested up for that one. Then there are only 3.5 days until the journey home, so lots to fit in, in not so much time… It’s flown over so quickly and yet we’ve done so much so far. It’ll be odd being back at work on Monday morning!

Day 11: Road Trip – Last leg (Long Beach, Malibu, Pacifica)

So after a nice stay in LA and Long Beach we had a nice chilled breakfast then set ourselves on our last leg if the great pilgrimage… It’s been amazing driving the country I’d recommend it to anyone the west coast is stunning and has so much to offer and it’s not as expensive as you might think. I’d come back in a heartbeat.

To finish our journey we travelled the scenic route so I could see Malibu. Now I could totally live in Malibu, it’s gorgeous, we stopped for fish and chips at a beachside restaurant where apparently the biker community hangs out. Saw some nice choppers and stunning Harley’s.

The drive felt longer than the others because we’d (by that really I mean I) had a day off from driving by stopping at Josh’s families house for 2 nights. Although Angela did have to drive the streets of LA for us.

I returned the rental car this morning at the airport. My first solo drive as Angela needed to catch up on some Zzz’s. I survived but yeah I need more practice at this driving abroad thing! So I said goodbye to the Toyota Corrolla handed in the keys and jumped into Melissa’s Scion back to Pacifica.

As I write this I’m looking out across the ocean from Melissa’s deck in Pacifica with a cup of tea in one hand. This is the life!

Ps – Thank you to Josh’s family for making me feel so welcome.

Day 10: Road Trip (LA in a Day – Santa Monica Pier, Runyon Canyon, Beverley Hills, Hollywood Blvd)

Santa Monica Pier was the first stop on this whistle stop adventure of southern California. I got my picture taken Forrest Gump style outside of Bubba Gump Shrimp co. Yes it is a real restaurant chain it was created after the movie was made. I was a total tourist, I was stunned by everything I saw that day!

I went up on the ferris wheel (you’ll know it from nearly every movie that has a ferris wheel, in fact I think the whole pier has been used for a lot of scenes). And bonus we saw dolphins playing in the ocean! Soooo cute and if we’d not gone up we’d never have seen them.

I ate a corn-dog, we have to get these in the UK they’re well nice – I’d bring some back if I had a bigger case!

We also went for a stroll along the beach front in Santa Monica and took in the sand, sun and sea. We saw a surf competition and loads a tanned and toned people, it’s like everyones main aim is to look good! I totally wouldn’t fit in here…

We drove up the various streets that you’ll all know and love up to Runyon Canyon. The views from that place are amazing, hazy through the LA smog but amazing. I saw the Hollywood sign, and some stunning houses and pools, clearly houses of the rich and fabulous.

Our last stop of the day was Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and the walk of fame. It’s packed down there, tourist central and difficult to get around in but I saw various peoples stars and handprints along the way.

A packed day, but we did the most important things to me! LA is a sight to behold…

Slight Delay!

Hi I’m writing this from Angela’s laptop, I do have 2 blog posts written and ready to send but for some reason the internet is playing up on my iPod and I’m too lazy to rewrite them on here – so I’ll post them when I get a good wifi connection.

But just in case anyone thought I had died from the lack of posting I haven’t…

Right then time to shuffle to LA to see what the fuss is all about!

xoxo

Day 9: Road Trip (Sacramento – Long Beach)

Well Southern California is totally different to Oregon and Washington, it’s hot, a little deserty looking and my god is it hot. So you catch my drift…

The drive down was about 6 and a half hours, and we only hit traffic on one section of the 405. But on the way we literally flew as we wanted to beat the 405′s road closures between certain junctions. We did stop for some drinks and gas but most of the sightseeing was from the window and when we did want to stop for photos there was no where to go!

I did however discover the other night that Newcastle brown ale is sold here in America! Which I found incredibly random so I had a couple of them with my dinner. We are staying with Josh’s Mam and Grandma for the next 2 days in Long Beach, they have a pool and the house is huge! But anyway we arrived around 7:00 had a chinwag and then Angela and me went out for dinner at a Lebanese place where they sold what looks like a Donner Kebab but with real meat not remains sprayed off carcasses and moulded into a generic meat… It was yummy.

So we’ve now planned the LA tour and are heading out in a while to go start that adventure!

Day 8: Road Trip (Hiouchi – Sacramento)

Hiouchi is a hip hop and happening place, it’s got a Gas station, a Motel, a Cafe and a Wood Carver and that’s pretty much it. We had breakfast at the cafe and then headed off to explore the Redwoods.

We dropped in at a place called Trees of Mystery but upon arriving found out it would take longer than anticipated and it was going to cost us… So we roamed around the gift shop, met Bigfoot and got freaked out by the massive talking Paul Bunyan statue. We thought it was pre-recorded, but he spoke to us as we left.

We twisted and turned our way through the redwood highway and drove through a redwood tree, it’s not as crazy as it sounds we really did it. I’ve got photographic evidence! We dropped in to see Big tree… But we think maybe we should have dropped in to see it before we wandered around the other trails in Prairie Creek State Park, it was a little bit of a let down. I think they need to do a re-measure, he didn’t look so big to me. We saw some Elk in the park – again I took photos.

We then continued our drive down the 101 to connect to I-5 and meandered through the mountains and small connecting pioneer towns (we even saw a ghost town, or remaining sections of one).

We arrived in Sacramento around 7:00 and got to our hotel, it’s randomly decorated and quite funky looking, although it looks like we’re the only ones here? And good lord is it hot down here. We went out for dinner with Josh’s cousin Dave his wife Shauna and daughter Madeline who showed us round the old town and took us to a stunning restaurant called Cafeteria, it’s a massive space with a huge deck and patio and I ate all if my ‘deconstructed’ chicken pot pie! So that’s what 3 meals the whole trip?

The old town in Sacramento looks like the kind of places you see in westerns it’s even got one of the old Steam boats docked in the Sacramento river. The other river in the area is called the American river, I think they had an off day when coming up with names!

So I’m now in the area where Terminator was governor… Crazy!

Day 7: Road Trip (Lincoln City – Hiouchi)

Today’s adventure along the Oregon coastline began with a pancake breakfast at Pig n Pancake. They’re a chain that is only in Oregon state but god do they do good pancakes! It filled us up for most of the day.

Our travels took us on a nice relaxed adventure following the 101 down to our destination near Crescent city. We’re only 15 minutes or so from it in Hiouchi.

On our way we dropped into nearly all the small towns for a look at something, from getting salt water taffy to looking around the gift shops. But mostly to look at and take photos of the coast. The highlight of the day though was the sea lion cave which was brilliant and random, we kind of just stumbled on it on the roadside. It’s the largest cave in the world and it’s home to a massive colony of Stellar sea lions who have been observed in the cave and surrounding coast for many years. To get down to the cave you take a lift which took a while to install, as initially it looked like it was accessed by a series of walkways. It did smell a little but if your looking at a species that’s diet consists of fish it’s going to smell!

We also passed a Safari park and some Dinosaurs, caught a local Market. Again, random… We missed out on seeing the safari park because we just plain didn’t know about it!

So now we’re at Hiouchi watching kill bill vol. 2 while planning the route through the redwoods to Sacramento tomorrow. I say we, I mean Angela as I don’t really know the area. But I would totally recommend doing Oregon to anybody it’s gorgeous and there are loads of camping grounds with wifi!

Right early, early start tomorrow long drive and lots to see. We’ve got to drive to a schedule tomorrow – today was so leisurely we ran a teensy bit later than planned.
