As previously mentioned I am a massive animal nut (at least i assume I have mentioned it, and if I haven’t I apologise profusely for my lack of continuity). I have had various pets of varying species over the years of my life. And most episodes during my life can be distinctly attached to the ownership and shared experiences of the animals that I had at the time who have sadly passed on.
I’m a gundog girl… All other dog’s although fabulous in my eyes deep down don’t really compare (but I am hideously biased). My current charge Tweed is a Labrador 3/4 and Springer Spaniel 1/4 cross. His origins are from our 2 most fabulous lines of Labrador and springer spaniels, with an interjection of a local stunner who is a working pedigree Labrador.
His grandfather was my boy, Teal, he was the most brilliant friend anyone could ever have. He was a brilliant companion and had a heart of pure gold. He may not have been a top retriever and worker but he was the best dog, and loyal to the end. Sadly he passed away in 2009 while I was on holiday, it tore me up that I wasn’t with him, but my family was there during his final moments. I still feel guilty for not being there… and always will. It was so unexpected as he was only 10 and fit and healthy…
After his passing I never intended getting another dog until I left home, but an opportunity I couldn’t pass up came in the form of Teal’s daughter, Misty’s litter. And that is where little Tweed came from. And he is just like his Grandpa and Mum in that he has a temperament to die for but also has a good set of brains. He’s got some work to do on refining his training but he’s coming on a topper and if he was a pedigree lab he’d be a beautiful example of the breed. the only noticeable trace of his spaniel heritage is a small white fleck on his chest and a white mark on the inside of his foot pads.
Other than the dog’s I have had Rabbit’s, Ferret’s, Guniea-Pigs (or cavies to the professionals amongst us), Hamsters and Rats. I’m a big mammal person, although I have kept fish during my youth!
Screw Raindrops on roses, and whiskers on kittens (I don’t really get cats, but I’m sure I’ll own one at some point) Dog’s are my favourite things!!
